Insomnia is a common disorder that can make it difficult to sleep, difficult to stay asleep, or
cause you to wake up too soon and not be able to return to sleep. You may feel tired when you are
awake due to sleep deprivation. A sleeping disorder can sap your energy level and affect your state
of mind, health, work life and personal life. At some point, many adults experience short-term (acute)
insomnia, which lasts for days or weeks. It’s usually the result of stress or a traumatic event.
But some people have long-term (chronic) insomnia that lasts for a month or more. Insomnia may be
the primary problem, or it may be associated with other medical conditions or medications.
Insomnia is identified as anidra (absence of sleep) and alpanidratha (broken sleep) in ayurveda.
Anidra or absence of rest is identified with a vatha vitiation or a vatha predominant condition
and alpanidratha is a pitha overwhelming condition caused by pitha humor vitiation. A proper sleeping
pattern is essential for the maintenance of ojus, the ultimate factor for maintaining physical and
mental health. Anidratha and alpanidratha are clinical conditions related to insomnia. Anidratha or
alpanidratha are mentioned as symptoms rather than a disease.
The Ayurvedic approach to deal with the sleep disorder is to re-balance the imbalanced Doshas. The
